For freshies, it is an occasional outing; for PGs, it is a place for having birthday parties when the canteen just isn’t classy enough; for seasoned seniors, trips to this place are too common to be of any consequence. For MSc Chem/EP junta, two tables here prove to be enough for the whole batch to hang out. For some, it is not as good as Laxmi, while for others, it is just a place to eat at when you don’t/can’t eat in the mess, don’t feel like eating in the canteen, and don’t have time to go any where out of the campus. But, given that it’s a place we go to often, we experiment far too little, sticking to the Hakka Noodles and Paneer Amritsaris, while so much interesting stuff lies hidden in plain view.

So, here it is, our personal recommendation — what we call the Best of Gulmohar. We know Gulmohar is not haute cuisine, but the next time you go to Gullu, try out one of these things, and we are sure you won’t regret it. The Things You Never New Existed section is basically for stuff that is either not in the menu or is rarely tried out by people.

Note: In general, we feel that the Chinese preparations in Gulmohar are pretty awesome, and are far better than the Indian stuff. No wonder then that most of the stuff in the list below is from the non-Indian part of the menu.

SOUPS
Go Eat Now!

  • Lemon Coriander Soup — infi awesome soup. Fresh and delectable. Looks, smells and tastes great — a veritable treat for the senses.
  • Chicken Yakni Soup
  • Lamb Paprika — a bit on the spicy side, but pretty hot and awesome.

Things You Never Knew Existed

  • French Onion Soup — Not on the menu, but a pretty nice soup. Beware! The variability in its preparation seems to be pretty high. Order when you are feeling particularly lucky.
  • Veg. Minestrone — Decent creamy soup. Worth a try.

STARTERS/APPETIZERS
Go Eat Now!

  • Veg Crispie
  • Veg Kungpao
  • Pahaadi Chicken — With its fresh minty flavour, this is a strong recommendation
  • Dragon Rolls

Things You Never Knew Existed

  • Paneer Baby Corn Springler — Its appearance is a bit weird, but it’s pretty tasty

MAIN COURSE
Go Eat Now!

  • Mexican Chilly Paneer — Bell peppers in a very tasty gravy. Priced Rs. 105, so ideal if someone’s treating you.
  • Veg. Tiranga — Interesting dish. Try it out.
  • Butter Chicken — Pretty cliche, but good.
  • Palak Paneer — Very few people try this, mostly because they don’t like paalak. But, it’s pretty good.
  • Veg. balls in Garlic/ Hunan Sauce — The weirdo name notwithstanding, this one’s pretty tasty.
  • Peas Pulao — Make sure you get fresh green peas and not Wataana
  • Chicken Dum Biryani
  • Dal Khichdi — Priced at Rs. 50, it is a simple fix. When you are hungry and want plain old daal-chaawal, go for it!

Things You Never Knew Existed

  • Malaysian Noodles — Flat noodles with loads of bell peppers.
  • Thai Red Curry — Expensive, but interesting. The gravy has a coconut base.
  • Tandoori Pomfret

DESSERTS
Go Eat Now!

  • Malai Kulfi
  • Kesar Kulfi — The toast of Gulmohar. Not too expensive, but very tasty.
  • Sizzling Brownie with Ice-cream

Things You Never Knew Existed

  • Fruit Punch — Tastes pretty artificial (mostly because it is), but decent.
  • Virgin Pinacolada — Decent.

Bach ke Rahna!

  • Fresh lime juice — there is nothing fresh about this preparation, which clearly tastes and smells of lemon juice that has been standing in a bottle for a few days.
  • Boring canned soups — the sweet corn soup is clearly canned, and even if it isn’t, it tastes pretty artificial. Ditch.
