IMG_9932 (1)Last year, IIT Bombay comfortably won the Inter IIT Championships, to loud joyous cries of “Mr Lova Lova”, the team anthem with mysterious origins. Defending the title this year, though, seems to be an imposing challenge.

Readers may like to be reminded that the Inter IIT Championship comprises of a total of 130 maximum attainable points, which is a sum of 10 points each per sporting genre. Aquatics and Athletics however contribute 20 points each to the total score. Aquatics is the only sport which is held in October at a time when the climate is warmer, whereas the rest of the sporting genres will be fought for in the coming week. Another noteworthy fact is that the Men’s trophy, the Women’s trophy and the Staff trophy are independent events with not much in common besides the location and time.

This put IIT Madras, the IIT which is widely considered to be our biggest hurdle to the trophy this year, at a 14 point lead above us. The March Past competition today, for which Olympic medal winning boxer M.C. Mary Kom was the Chief Guest, has helped us salvage the situation marginally, and we now trail by 13 points at the time of going to press.

Not helping the process is the infrastructure at use here. Some facilities are still developing. UG Sports Nominee, Devansh Chawla, spoke to this correspondent about the state of the second cricket ground in use here. The second ground, which is slated to be used in many matches including the final, is underdeveloped, hastily built and has a great degree of moisture having been exposed to rain without covers a couple of days ago. The pitch seems to have been built by simply shaving off some grass closely. The balls reportedly fail to bounce above knee level despite vigorous attempts.[pullquote]The balls reportedly fail to bounce above knee level despite vigorous attempts.[/pullquote] Concerns are aloud about the dimensions of the squash court. The bedding facilities gave cause for complaint as well, with a few players reporting body-ache upon waking up in the morning. These and other concerns are being tabled at the Inter IIT Board meeting at the time this article is being composed.

Despites these hurdles, the team remains extremely motivated and determined. Gold medals are expected of quite a few teams, with the Basketball, Lawn Tennis, Squash, Table Tennis and other teams having practiced hard and high with confidence.

The event has but just started, and here’s hoping Mr Lova Lova brings back the trophy to its familiar home, 400076.[pullquote]Here’s hoping Mr Lova Lova brings back the trophy to its familiar home, 400076.[/pullquote] Go IIT Bombay!
