IITB added another event to its list of firsts on the 4th of November, 2011. Research Scholar Forum and the Institute Cultural Council in association with SilverScreen, the film club of IIT Bombay, screened the much-awaited ‘PHD’ (Piled Higher and Deeper) movie, being screened in campuses worldwide, brought to you by the creator of the popular online comic strip- PhD comics, Jorge Cham. This was the movie’s first screening in India.

The short movie, about 1 hour 15 mins long, was greeted with a thundering applause, by the jam-packed Convocation Hall. The movie provided a sneak-peek into the culture in academia by following the lives of four grad students as they struggled to find a balance with research, teaching assistant duties and their personal lives. The audience consisted mainly of post-grads; a few faculty members and under-grads were present too.

On a personal note, I think that a few scenes were exaggerated a bit and that one should take them with a pinch of salt. Regardless, such screenings could foster the amalgamation of the IITB fraternity.

People did complain that the audio was too loud and that they could not listen to the dialogues at times. Other than that, the organizers pulled off the event excellently. Kudos to them for getting the post-grads out of their labs and hostel rooms! It’s not every day that you see an Institute event in which post-grads form a size-able chunk of the audience!
