General Body Meeting : General Secretary of Sports Affair

The recent Sports General Body Meeting (GBM), led by the GSSA Siddharth Farkiya, and the institute sports council, covered a wide range of topics, addressing both ongoing challenges and upcoming plans for the sports community at the institute. The meeting provided an open platform for students to raise their concerns and receive updates on various initiatives.

Key areas of discussion:

Fitness Body Scans: One topic discussed was the fitness body scan initiative, participants reported seeing inaccuracies in the results, and the organisers were not able to address all the queries related to injury prevention. The GSSA responded that there was only one helper who couldn’t accommodate the overwhelming number of participants. However, the initiative is set to return next semester, with plans to address the issues and ensure smoother management.

Inter-IIT Aquatics: There were complaints from the aquatics community about the lack of media coverage for the recent Inter-IIT Aquatics event. The GSSA responded that updates were regularly posted on social media from the very first day. Moving forward, the sports council has planned additional events and improvements in coverage to give these athletes the recognition they deserve.

Tracksuit Delay for Inter-IIT Athletes: Another issue raised was the delay in providing tracksuits to the Aquatics contingent before they left for the competition. This was attributed to a manufacturing delay, but the situation was resolved by sending the tracksuits later via a sports officer. To prevent such future delays, the council plans to order sports kits at least 15 days before the inter-IIT Sports meet which will be held in December.

General Championships (GC) Update: The General Championships (GC) were set to resume on October 13 with the Crossy GC event. There was confusion over the sudden halt of the Table Tennis GC event, which was stopped mid-tournament. Due to complaints from the two hostels, the wardens of H17 and H18 raised the student’s concern to the Dean SA. The GSSA was informed by the Dean SA to halt the table tennis GC midway. Questions were raised about why the FCFS system was implemented for participation this year. The GSSA explained that this decision was made to resolve conflicts between hostels. The new policy ensures fair opportunities by allowing the first 20% of sign-ups from each hostel to participate from their parent hostels.

Indoor Court Maintenance Issues
Players raised concerns about water leakage in indoor courts, leading to unsafe conditions. While approval for repairs was sought before the monsoons, the administration claimed it would be difficult to identify the problem until the rains arrived. The GSSA assured students that work on permanent fixes would begin once the monsoon is over, with more details expected in the coming month.

Security at Sports Facilities
There were concerns raised over incidents of theft from the indoor courts. To address these issues, CCTV cameras have been installed in indoor badminton courts, with plans to expand surveillance to basketball courts and other courts. However, a shortage of equipment has delayed the installation of additional cameras, which should be done by the next semester.

Introduction of Sports Analytics Courses: A form was floated earlier and more than 80% of students expressed interest in studying sports analytics courses. Discussions about them are ongoing with professors from various departments. While the timeline is still uncertain, the hope is to launch these courses next semester, depending on professor availability. No step has been taken for ISURP projects for sports analytics.

Court Availability for Beginners, Especially Women: Another issue raised was the lack of badminton court availability for beginners, particularly female players. The GSSA assured attendees that fixed time slots for Inter-IIT practices have been allocated, leaving enough courts free for beginners to practice on. Additionally, workshops for female badminton players have been held to gauge interest and ensure adequate court access.

Female Swimming Coach: A question was raised about appointing a female coach for swimming during the girls’ time slot. A form has been circulated to gauge interest, and the process of bringing in a female coach is underway.
