Mohammad Anas, an undergraduate in Electrical Engineering tells about the importance of friends in his insti journey not only limited to these 4 years but throughout life and his love for football. He is now placed in a software company and is planning for a Masters degree in the coming years.

1. Where are you from? Tell us a bit about yourself and your journey leading up to here.

I’m from Kerala, and I did my schooling from GCC so I lived 18 years there before coming to IIT Bombay.

2. What clubs/teams were you a part of? Tell us about your journey through the club.

How did they impact your experience in the institute?

I was not really part of any clubs, but I liked playing sports. I played football and was part of hostel GCs etc.

3. What is something that you’re proud of having accomplished during your journey here?

After coming here, I’ve changed completely. I’m more mature than before and trust myself to make important decisions. But the biggest thing I have accomplished is having a lot of really good friends. I see them being lifelong mates.

4. Any funny incidents you’d like to share?

A funny incident I recall is a trip we had in our third year (right after coming back to campus after covid). It was more like a series of very impulsive bad decisions starting with the whole trip itself. So it begins with a friend suggesting a trip at 10 in the night where we rent a car and go somewhere the very next day. We did a Google search to find a place and found somewhere in Lonavala. So we decided to go there. We set out on this trip and got lost 100 times because of the excellent navigators we had. In the end, we finally reached the foot of a hill, which was very different to the photos we saw on Google. And then it hit us, we were there on one of the hottest days of April. And to add to that, 3 of us were fasting that day meaning we couldn’t even drink water till dusk. We were quite frustrated but that didn’t stop us from hiking that scorched-out hill. We climbed all the way up, climbed down and then a friend left his glasses up there somewhere; so we climbed up and down again. By the time we were down, we were so exhausted that we just sat there till sunset and returned. So that was one of the craziest trips we had.

5. What is your favourite spot in the institute?

It would be the football ground because that’s where my friendships, connections, and everything happened. I even went there only to hang out and did a lot of things that were not allowed.

6. If your college experience was a movie, what genre would it be and why?

It would be a funny and comedy genre. It’s just a group of dumb people that I hang out with and have the time of my life with.

7. What are your future plans?

I got placed and I’m going to Bangalore, that’s the immediate plan. I’m hoping to go for a master’s abroad in 2 years.

8. What made you choose software as a field you want to work in?

I got placed in a software company and my first rejection made me choose software. I didn’t really get an internship in core, so I went for software and then got into that as a job.

9. Do you have any regrets? Anything you wanted to do during your institute life but could not do due to some reasons?

There would be a lot of stuff. I came here during COVID. The first year was bad, I didn’t really get to talk to a lot of batchmates, and I didn’t get to join any clubs, etc. I do regret that when it was online, I got cut out.

10. Some tips you would like to give to students here, some realisations as you end your journey here?

Try out different things after coming here, that is something I didn’t do and I regret that. Get an experience of everything just to try it out. Other than that it’s your life.
