Deepanshu Bagotiya

Deepanshu was an undergraduate from the Computer Science and Engineering department. He has a knack for startups and has explored quite a bit of the entrepreneurial domain during his time at the institute. Have fun reading about Deepanshu.

Q. Where are you from? Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am from Mahendragarh, which is a city in Haryana. I am a Computer Science and Engineering graduate, and just like most students, before deciding to join IIT Bombay, I remember talking to many seniors for guidance. 

Q. What clubs and teams were you a part of? 

While I had the opportunity to attend numerous events hosted by various clubs, I wasn’t actively a part of any club or tech team. Looking back, I wish I was a part of something that could’ve enriched my experience.

Q. What are you proud of having accomplished during your journey here?

In academics, I explored a lot of machine learning (ML). I did advanced courses, a one year BTP and an internship under MasterCard. I also loved being involved in the entrepreneurship environment here. I’ve picked up essential skills during my time here that will help me ahead in life, like learning new topics within a day (like a day before exams) and building good relations with others. I’m also proud of making a complete friend circle within reach that allowed us to plan new activities to try together. 

Q. What do your future plans look like? 

I’ve had a very explorative journey so far. I started doing software engineering during my first year, influenced heavily by my peers. Later, out of interest, I tried finance. Though interesting to me, I decided to pursue a career in ML. I was engaged in entrepreneurship, and we even built a startup that didn’t succeed during the lockdown period. Although I have planned a startup idea I would like to work on, I want to prioritise a job for now and maybe pursue an MBA someday. 

Q. Your favourite spot at insti. 

My favourite place has to be the Gymkhana grounds, at 2 am. There’s something special about being there at night. 

Q. Is there anything you wanted to do during your insti life but could not do for some reason? Do you have any regrets? 

Given a chance, I would have chosen a different branch with much less pressure. It would have allowed me to explore my other interests, like philosophy and finance. I also wasn’t able to take specific courses of interest because of CPI cutoffs, and that is something that I disliked. 

Q. A message you would like to give to your fellow batchmates, the outgoing batch. 

I hope we all stay in touch and find ways to balance our jobs and spend time with old friends. Planning trips with old friends is a great way to do so. It makes my heart heavy to graduate and leave college after making many memories and friends here for four years. The hostel life was amazing, and I will miss the campus life. 

Q. Some tips you would like to give students here or some realisations as you end your journey here. 

I suggest that juniors approach seniors for help; all it takes to build connections is dropping them a message. It can be terrifying to try new things, but it allows you to meet people with different mindsets. It’s an opportunity you won’t get elsewhere, so rather than sitting in your room the entire day, go out, talk to people, and get involved in activities that will give you the experience you’re looking for. It is natural to take stress on the tiny things but remember, things always have a way of falling into place. So, don’t have any expectations about things, and use college as a journey to learn and enjoy. Even if you’re slightly interested in something, skip the hesitation and go for it with a calm attitude.
